Ellie and her kittens are doing well

So the last few days have been nail biting. Since the kittens were born on Monday morning, we have been weighing them and checking them and taking pictures of them like nervous parents.  We started supplement feeding one of the little guys because he didnt seem to gain anything in the first day. Now all the information I have says just to hold off a bit. We weighed all three of them and they each gained 13g from the previous day. Thats a pretty big weight gain so I am breathing a little easier now.

We’ve also been delving into the world of minerals and vitamins with cats. How DID they ever survive without us before ;) Actually I am just supplementing with an acidophilus mix which is suppose to aid in their digestion. We’ll see…

One of our little boys has been “Claimed” and has been renamed from Chewbaca to Kayden which means, “Little Battle” very sweet!  We still have one other boy available but I am hesistant to post him until I see how he thrives over the next few days. Also, one Vet site said after the fourth day there should be little risk of death due to fading. So I am holding my breath until Saturday.

Our son Lucas, wants to pet them and hold them constantly. We allow him one small pet in the morning and one in the evening. He is rather partial to Luke Skywalker, I wonder why!  I heard from a woman on one of my yahoo groups that she has  a Luke Skywalker and an Obi Wan Kenobi too. Small world!

This weekend they will move to their new sem-permanet home of the large dog crate in the dining room. They are doing really well in the closet right now but I am worried Ellie will begin to get restless and will want to move them. Its not hard for her to get the closet doors open so there is always that concern.  No matter what we bought for her or what wild and crazy ideas we had to make the perfect whelping box, in the end she picked her own space, an old box in the closet that happened to have a pillow in it. My husband kept saying, “Get a cardboard box” and i kept saying, “No we can do better than that!” and bought an expensive rubbermaid tub etc.  Nope, she wanted nothing to do with it… kept waiting by the closet door till someone would inadvertently leave it open long enough for her to get in there. We have one of those long closets that you cant get into the back except for twice a year to store the off season clothes away. Of course she always wanted in the very back corner.  Once I realized where she was getting, I emptied the closet, rearranged items and set it up to be more practical for her birthing purposes (well really more practical for us!). Mom and “Slaves” were pleased with the new setup.

So now we will endeavor to break her happy peace in the cardboard box in the closet. We will move same cardboard box to the crate and the litter box as well. Right now we have a nice covered deal which she prefers. When the kittens are older we will put the smaller open one in there so they can “play” and “learn.”

Okay enough blogging for today, I have to save something for tomorrow :)
