They weeble, they wobble, they fall down.  All three stand up and wobble a few steps… they climb over one another and play. They get on their backs and bat at each other and even play with fingers that come down to tickle them.  Their eyes are open wide…. they hear approaching sounds and turn their heads searching for the source.  They try to sleep amid their brother and sister climbing all over them.  Sometimes a voice will call out to them and a brave little girl will open her mouth wide and let out a quiet little hiss.  Who’s there? Friend or Foe?

Mama is restless and likes to take long journeys away.  She always returns when they speak their plaintive, hungry cries.  She cries herself at night… she takes care of their needs but she is sore and wants affection too… soon they will be big enough to wander around themselves, eat the same food she eats and even drink water. One day they wont need her anymore but for now… she is what they look forward to most and she takes great care of them.

They grow and grow… each one at their own steady pace.  What will they do next?

Luke Skywalker has a new name, Puck. His new mom and dad picked it out because it means little sprite among other things.  Its a great name and I am sure it will suit him well.

Last night Ellie was crying in her crate at 2am. Exasperated, I let her out thinking she just wanted to stretch her legs as was her wont lately.  An hour later she was crying at our bedroom door. As I opened it nearly stepped on little Puck whom she had brough to our doorstep. I can only assume the dog had stressed her out the night before and she felt like it was time to pack up and move house.

We put one and all back in the box and she was content for the time being.

Our webcam is back up and working consistently.  You can see it at www.aliencattery.com/liveweb.phtml  Boy can you tell how fast these little guys are growing!

Last night was Day 6. We took some cute pics and sent them to their new families (look for them online tonight).  Luke opened his eyes on Saturday and Kayden followed on Sunday. All three are progressing well. Their umbilical cords have fallen off neatly and other than a few lingering scratches on Kayden’s head, all seem to be healthy and thriving well.  Yesterday both Luke and Leia were neck and neck at 218g!  Thats pretty big. Kayden follows in his runt way at a solid 180g, but gaining every day.

Ellie is such an awesome mom. We moved her and her brood to the common area in an oversized wire dog crate this weekend. She tolerated the change pretty well though protested at first. As soon as we moved the dog out of the room she settled down. Now if the dog or her sister wander by she sits up and uses all four of her legs to shelter the kittens. The crate is covered with a large blanket but of course she knows when they are nearby. That isnt very often though so for the most part she can rest easy.

Our webcam isnt quite as clear these days as there are noticeable shadows and the angle is strange. Its the best we can do under present conditions.

Our son Lucas is completely enthralled with the kittens. Last night he asked if he could sleep with one of them. We laughed and told him, “not yet” they arent big enough yet :)  He loves to pet them and try to pick them up. He is very gentle and sweet with them.  Even mom Ellie doesnt seem to mind anymore.

More soon, and look for more pics!

I was so excited to see the little gang last night. After I feed my own son, the next thing I do is feed Mom and check on her brood.  We weighed Leia first, and she grew a whopping 17g. That girl is a Moose! She outweighs her brothers by over 10g.  She is at least an inch longer too. She may be a big girl like her mom, nice and hearty!  AND, I couldnt believe it, but that little girl started crawling AND opening her eyes last night. She is really maturing fast!

Little Kayden gained 19g! That is a tremendous growth spurt and he is rapidly catching up to his brother. They started out the same size and he was just a bit lazy on the first day and didnt get his fill. He only grew 3g the first day. Now they are almost the same and he’s a mover & a shaker!

Little Luke has a new family as of last night! His new parents are Peter and Hadley from Pacifica, California. He too gained 14g in one day. Keep in mind average weight gain is between 7-20g, so all these guys are on the high end of the growth curve.  Luke has a plump little belly and is the most easy going of the bunch.

This weekend they will be moved to their more semi-permanent home where we will re-hook-up the webcam. So if you see a lot of scrambling and moving, thats just us getting them situated.

Have a great weekend everybody!

So the last few days have been nail biting. Since the kittens were born on Monday morning, we have been weighing them and checking them and taking pictures of them like nervous parents.  We started supplement feeding one of the little guys because he didnt seem to gain anything in the first day. Now all the information I have says just to hold off a bit. We weighed all three of them and they each gained 13g from the previous day. Thats a pretty big weight gain so I am breathing a little easier now.

We’ve also been delving into the world of minerals and vitamins with cats. How DID they ever survive without us before ;) Actually I am just supplementing with an acidophilus mix which is suppose to aid in their digestion. We’ll see…

One of our little boys has been “Claimed” and has been renamed from Chewbaca to Kayden which means, “Little Battle” very sweet!  We still have one other boy available but I am hesistant to post him until I see how he thrives over the next few days. Also, one Vet site said after the fourth day there should be little risk of death due to fading. So I am holding my breath until Saturday.

Our son Lucas, wants to pet them and hold them constantly. We allow him one small pet in the morning and one in the evening. He is rather partial to Luke Skywalker, I wonder why!  I heard from a woman on one of my yahoo groups that she has  a Luke Skywalker and an Obi Wan Kenobi too. Small world!

This weekend they will move to their new sem-permanet home of the large dog crate in the dining room. They are doing really well in the closet right now but I am worried Ellie will begin to get restless and will want to move them. Its not hard for her to get the closet doors open so there is always that concern.  No matter what we bought for her or what wild and crazy ideas we had to make the perfect whelping box, in the end she picked her own space, an old box in the closet that happened to have a pillow in it. My husband kept saying, “Get a cardboard box” and i kept saying, “No we can do better than that!” and bought an expensive rubbermaid tub etc.  Nope, she wanted nothing to do with it… kept waiting by the closet door till someone would inadvertently leave it open long enough for her to get in there. We have one of those long closets that you cant get into the back except for twice a year to store the off season clothes away. Of course she always wanted in the very back corner.  Once I realized where she was getting, I emptied the closet, rearranged items and set it up to be more practical for her birthing purposes (well really more practical for us!). Mom and “Slaves” were pleased with the new setup.

So now we will endeavor to break her happy peace in the cardboard box in the closet. We will move same cardboard box to the crate and the litter box as well. Right now we have a nice covered deal which she prefers. When the kittens are older we will put the smaller open one in there so they can “play” and “learn.”

Okay enough blogging for today, I have to save something for tomorrow :)

So far three beautiful kittens…. maybe more on the way?? Hard to tell. Looks like right now we have two creams and one dark tortie. The creams will probably be torties too but you never know. Ellie’s doing good and kittens appear to be thriving.
